What should Oud wood smell like? Do you know what an oud is? It is used in the form of oud oil ( dehn al oud) or a resin ( oud mubakhar ). When used in a perfume composition, oud is most often a base note. At the first in normal condition, the wood is light and in white color without smell or only normal wood smell. Because of infection like ants, drilling…the tree will produce resin to enclose the wound.


What is oud wood

That resin is dark and aromatic. Known as the “five thousand dollar per pound scent,” Oud or Oudh is by far one of the most expensive raw fragrance ingredients in the world. Oud (agarwoo aloe woo eagle woo gaharu) is formed in a tropical evergreen tree called Agar tree (Aquilaria species) which is believed to have originated from Assam , India.


Agar tree or Aquilaria is a genus of fifteen species of trees, called lign aloes or lign-aloes trees , in the Thymelaeaceae , now native to southeast Asia. If the heartwood does not become infected with the mol it remains odorless and a pale color. Oud wood is one of the most rare , precious , and expensive ingredients in a perfumer’s arsenal.

Rich and powerful, oud’s sweet, woody scent is instantly recognisable. It is formed in the heartwood of aquilaria trees when they become infected with a type of mold. The Arabic: العود ‎ (al-ʿūd or oud) literally denotes a thin piece of wood similar to the shape of a straw. It may refer to the wooden plectrum traditionally used for playing the ou to the thin strips of wood used for the back, or to the wooden soundboard that distinguishes it from similar instruments with skin-faced bodies. The sound of the Oud vibrates within its hollow body.


Usually, the open side of the back portion is known as the rosette. Kinam Oud is only formed in the core wood of Aquilaria crassna Pierre ex Lecomte. And the Aquilaria crassna Pierre ex Lecomte is only in Vietnam, Cambodia, Thai Lan, Lao, Hai Nan island of China. The essential oil is derived from the heartwood of the agarwood tree. Agarwood is sometimes called Aloeswood.

Agar- wood , also known as oud , oodh or agar, is a dark resinous heartwood that forms in Aquilaria and Gyrinops trees (large evergreens native to southeast Asia) when they become infected with a type of mould. Oud instrument has a large soundbox connected to a short neck. The instrument has a pear-shaped body which is a deep, striped bowl made from lightweight wood. This instrument has an excellent soun and it is very durable in comparison to other Turkish ouds. The oud has a distinctive sound which makes it stand out amongst others.
