Ebony is dense enough to sink in water. Hard and heavy with a very fine texture. Takes a high glossy finish. It has been treasured through the ages from statues found in Egyptian tombs to the fret boards on violins. A very dense wood with specific gravity of 1. One of the most intensely black woods known to man is ebony.

Combined with its very high density, which means it can sink in the water, ebony provides a fine texture and an ability to polish up very smoothly. Some of the species of ebony available include the genus Diospyros yiel which produces a so-called striped ebony. African Blackwood is very similar in density, color, and (unfortunately) cost, but is technically in the Dalbergia genus and isn’t considered a true ebony. Wenge and Katalox are two woods that are sometimes used as an ebony substitute. Where does ebony wood come from?


What does ebony wood look like? The sapwood is pink to pale red-brown in color, while the heartwood is a uniform jet-black or black-brown streaked. Bombay ebony (D. montana) yields a yellowish gray, soft, but durable wood.

Gabon, Lagos, Calabar, or Niger ebony. It is native to India. Demand for ebony wood is very high: it’s a high quality hardwood that’s very har very strong, and most of all, very black. Low supply and high demand means prices go way up.

The coloured grades of African ebony can be extremely attractive. There is a growing acceptance and use of these coloured grades and an understanding that it makes sense to use this wonderful timber in a more responsible fashion.
