Plug load control

Legrand can help you meet new ASHRAE 90. Title requirements to switch receptacles Off. This is because they can absorb electrical line surges as well as help isolate equipment from any high or low line voltage. There are two strategies for providing automatic plug load or receptacle control.

Plug load control

Occupancy based control: Occupancy or Vacancy sensors constantly monitor if the space is occupied. When the space is vacant the sensor will ensure the receptacles are automatically turned OFF either directly or by sending a signal to the lighting control system. The nLight nPPPL power pack extends the power pack family , delivering robust system performance and design versatility for commercial and industrial control applications.

Piv states that “Circuit Controls for 120-Volt Receptacles and Controlled Receptacles. Roughly half of the plug load energy expense occurs while the building is empty. Energy and energy cost savings were calculated by taking the difference between overall plug load energy consumption during a baseline perio and the plug load energy consumption after sche dule - based controls were applied. This simple approach was used because that is how building owners typically calculate energy savings. But when these controls are specified as part of the lighting control system, the plug load controls often show up under the lighting control system estimate.

Energy savings are achieved when the device is either transitioned to a low-power state, or it is de-energized to eliminate the power draw. Both can be executed either manually or automatically. A low-power state is between a de-energized state and a ready-to-use state. The plug load controllers may be networked for centralized control , which allows programming, measuring, and monitoring.

This is the nLight receptacle plug load control ler Amp. An option is available for a unit that provides bus power – this option ( BP) provides up to 40mA from each of its two RJ-ports by transforming Class line voltage (1VAC) to Class low voltage (VDC). They are part of a Wattstopper Digital Lighting Management (DLM) system, and enable energy-efficient control of plug loads. Check out Wattstopper DLM products here.

Wireless plug load controllers can be installed easily, providing remote, centralized control of appliances and energy consumption measurements for each individual receptacle. These can be controlled via a schedule, occupancy detection or in response to demand response load shed events. It quickly and easily installs inside a junction box and provides the ability to control individual receptacles if desired. More than of total energy consumed in US office buildings is used to power plug -in devices, many of which continue to draw power even when turned off. A recent GPG technology assessment found that advanced power strips (APS) that employ pre-programmed timers to de-energize such devices significantly reduce power usage: at workstations and in printer rooms and kitchens.

Devices are turned off nights, weekends and holidays when buildings are empty using the existing Wi-Fi network. Commercially available Advanced Power Strips offer a variety of control approaches, including manual control , automatic low-power state, schedule timers, load -sensing, occupancy, and vacancy. This paper describes those approaches in detail and presents multiple case studies demonstrating plug load controls.

As plug load control occurs in the same space as lighting control, it is reasonable to use the same approach to manage both loads. While the space is in use, the receptacles need to remain ON and the lights need to be controlled per the occupant’s requirements. Controlling plug loads is the next logical step towards reducing energy consumption.

The Echoflex Power Load Controller provides distributed control of any standard lighting fixture or lighting zone using wireless technology.
