Finishing teak

How to finish teak wood on a boat? Do you stain teak before varnishing? Can You varnish teak wood?


The secret to finishing teak is to wipe over with alcohol (IMS or similar) or cellulose thinners to remove the natural oils from the surface. Failure to do this causes seriously extended drying time. Some skippers varnish their swim platforms, too, using several coats of polyurethane and adding nonskid powder to the final coat to improve footing.


When teak is fresh-cut, it has an olive or light brown tint. Over the next few days or weeks, teak naturally. Teak can be used in the interior of any home for handrails, posts and balusters.

First, it would not feed mold and mildew. When the wood is freshly cut, the oil content at the surface gives teak a lovely golden glow. But, after some time, this color fades out and leaves teak with a silvery-gray hue.
